학술지 Communications Earth & Environment에 실린 논문에 따르면, 전 세계가 현재의 국가결정기여(Nationally Determined Contributions, NDCs)에서 제시한 2030년 온실가스 배출량 감축 목표를 80% 더 강화해야 파리협정의 지구온난화 억제 목표를 달성할 수 있다. UNEP이 ‘국가들이 현재 배출량 감축 공약을 “대략 5배”로 강화해야 한다’고 발표한 2020년 보고서와 비슷한 결론이다. 그러나 2020년 코로나19로 인한 급락을 제외하면 지난 10년간 온실가스 배출량은 연평균 1.4 % 증가했다.
